I’ve been making some Christmas Cards for the Compound Coffee Morning – In Saudi, the only recognised religion is Islam, therefore you can’t buy anything that depicts any other religion. You can occasionally buy seasonal things in Saudi, but usually it is well after the actual holiday, for example, for Easter, you could not buy any Easter eggs, however only yesterday there were some huge Lindt Easter eggs in one of the supermarkets.
Usually, if the Mutawa see any Christmas things, then they are immediately removed. Only last year we went to Marks and Spencers to pick up some items only to find we were too late as they had already been removed, however you do still see the odd Christmas item during the run up to Christmas, it seems to be that although something may look ‘Christmassy’ such as it may depict a wintery scene, or show christmas trees etc, as long as it doesn’t actually say ‘Christmas’ or something along those lines, then those items seem to be able to stay in the shop. Only the other day I picked up some Christmas stamps from a shop (that shall remain nameless) and saw this ribbon there, as well as a couple of other items.
Anyway, as you can’t exactly just pop into any shop and buy Christmas cards, I thought I’d make a few for the coffee morning with the hope people would want to buy some.
I used the White Christmas stamp set with smoky slate ink and using a pale blue pencil, gently coloured over the image. I added some pearl white glitter to give a bit of character.
Usually when I make cards this size, I put them in a decorated wax bag (like this) but that’s normally for a custom order. As these cards will be made for anyone to buy, I’m not sure whether people would prefer I use a normal envelope. I’d love your thoughts on this. Would you prefer to buy a card with a normal envelope, or one of these decorated bags?
